Stories have an unparalleled ability to capture the multidimensional nature of truth. Unlike mere facts, which can feel rigid and incomplete, stories weave together time, character, action, and setting to reveal the complexities of human experience. Truths like justice and integrity are far too intricate to be distilled into laws, statistics, or isolated facts. Facts require context—when, who, and where—to transform into deeper truths, and it is through storytelling that these elements come alive.

Truths Beyond Facts

Annette Simmons, in The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling, puts it this way:

Stories are “more true” than facts because stories are multidimensional. Truth with a capital “T” has many layers. Truths like justice or integrity are too complex to be expressed in a law, a statistic, or a fact. Facts need the context of when, who, and where to become Truths. A story incorporates when and who—lasting minutes or generations and narrating an event or series of events with characters, action, and consequences. It occurs in a place or places that gives us a where.

Through stories, we gain access to the layered and nuanced aspects of reality, helping us understand truths that facts alone cannot communicate.

Feeding the Right Narrative

Within each of us exists a duality—a "sick self" and a self striving for wellness. A well-known teaching illustrates this internal conflict beautifully: When a student asks which self will prevail, the teacher responds, “whichever self you feed.”
